Belmonte não impõe dívida do São Paulo ao futebol: ‘Foi 92% da meta’

In an interview on Zona Mista do Hernan, a program by Canal UOL, São Paulo’s football director, Carlos Belmonte, discussed how Pablo Maia’s injury last season impacted the club’s financial flow, as there were expectations of selling the midfielder for significant amounts.

"São Paulo is a football club, and to meet the budget, we need to have major player sales. It’s always been like that. In a year without substantial transfers, it’s impossible to meet the budget due to the institution’s expenses, especially concerning debt interest," stated Belmonte on Zona Mista do Hernan.

He added, "Since our administration began, we have achieved 92% of the projected budget for player sales. However, last year we fell short due to Pablo Maia’s injury, leaving R$ 80 million unaccounted for. Out of the R$ 287 million budgeted last year, R$ 80 million was expected from football."

Belmonte clarified that he doesn’t hold anyone accountable and believes the football department isn’t wasteful.

He pointed out that the main issue contributing to São Paulo’s deficit is the existing debt from when Julio Casares took over the presidency, which results in detrimental interest payments for the club.

"When Julio took charge, São Paulo had R$ 575 million in debt, leading to annual interest of R$ 70 to R$ 90 million that needs to be paid. Only the football department can cover these financial gaps," Belmonte explained.
